At MUNCH, we conduct bold, creative and pioneering research across art history, conservation, curatorial practice and mediation. We carry a particular responsibility for the field of knowledge around Edvard Munch, which we are constantly developing with academic curiosity and critical inquiry.
Research provides the knowledge base for our innovation work. We experiment with new ideas, formats and technologies to create more inclusive, engaging ways to access art – for the audiences of today and tomorrow. This is vital to fulfilling our core mission as a museum: preserving and increasing access to the collections of Edvard Munch and Rolf Stenersen. We also create space for artistic collaborators to explore new forms of expression and interaction.

Our research and innovation projects are designed to benefit the museum, the public and the broader society, and to strengthen our role as a relevant and future-facing cultural institution.
This work is grounded in the goals and principles of our Research and Innovation Strategy 2023–2028.
