For Edvard Munch, colour was essential – it is what gives a painting its soul and personality. But did you know that the colours in The Scream actually change over time?

Just like our own skin can get freckles in the sun or bruises when we accidentally bump into something, The Scream reacts to light, humidity, temperature and touch over time.

Luckily, conservators  are here to care for The Scream and the rest of the collection at MUNCH. They investigate, repair and research – so the art can be preserved and experienced for as long as possible.

In Tiny Conservators you get to become a miniature art saver! With help from the Conserv-o-saurus, you fight against Lady of Light, Dj Damp &Dry and Count TickTockula, who are all trying to drain The Scream of its colours! Only by absorbing the light rays, correcting imbalances in temperature and humidity, and – last but not least – battling the ravages of time can the Tiny Conservators save the colours in The Scream and ensure that future audiences can experience the soul of this iconic work of art.

Tiny Conservators is developed as part of the PERCEIVE (external link) research project, using new technologies and artificial intelligence to understand and protect the colours of art for the future.

About the PERCEIVE Research Project

PERCEIVE (external link) is an European research project transforming the way we study, simulate and exhibit coloured artworks – securing their legacy for future generations.

MUNCH is one of 11 partners in the project, contributing research on two versions of The Scream by Edvard Munch.

Funded by the European Union’s Horizon research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101061157.
