Ludvig Karsten (1876–1926) stood side by side with Edvard Munch in his time and had a deep fascination for the interplay of colors. His artistry encompasses everything from landscapes, nudes and interiors to still lifes, portraits and self-portraits – motifs that characterized the time.
Karsten's paintings are characterized by contrasting and expressive juxtapositions and he is considered one of Norway's most significant colorists. He was known for his impulsive and irrepressible personality, worked at a furious pace and had a temperament that left its mark.
With a restless wanderlust, a rich social life and a lively commitment, he gathered contacts across borders. This exhibition provides a close look at Karsten's diverse artistry and shows the breadth of his production. The Stenersen collection offers several of Karsten's most important works and is supplemented by loans from other significant collections.
